Sulfamic Acid
Sulfamic Acid, also spelled as Sulphamic Acid, is a water-soluble compound which is available in white crystalline or powder form.
It is less corrosive to metals compared to other strong acids, such as hydrochloric acid. The corrosion rate of metals in sulfamic acid is mild steel>>aluminum>copper>brass>>18-8 stainless steel, nevertheless the corrosion of mild steel was much lesser than that in HCl or in H2SO4.
Sulfamic Acid is often used as a replacement for Hydrochloric Acid for the removal of rust.
Sulfamic Acid Descaling Process
- The starting pH of Sulfamic Acid descalant should be <1.3.
- The dosage rate for Sulfamic Acid descalant depends on the degree of scaling. An 8- 10% solution will remove scales or deposits.
- Up to 10% of the solutions may be used at temperatures below 70 Degrees Celsius to remove stubborn deposits.
- Completion of descaling should be determined by either testing acidity or pH periodically.
- When descaling capacity is complete, acidity or pH should be constant and avoid pH 4.
- If the solution shows no acidity or pH rises to 4 or higher, then more Sulfamic Acid descalant solution should be added or new solution should be prepared.
- After descaling, equipment should be drained and flushed thoroughly with water, and any acid effluent should be neutralized with a neutralizer.
- The descaling activity of sulfamic acid descalant ceases at a pH of 4.
- Sulfamic Acid descalant should NOT be used on aluminum or galvanized surfaces.
Sulfamic Acid Uses
- Textile industry: it is used in the dye industry as a remover and a fixing agent for textile dyeing.
- Petroleum industry: it is used to remove the oil layer blockage.
- Electroplating solution: it is used in electroplating alloy or gold.
Industrial Applications of Sulfamic Acid
Amino sulfonic acid is used in swimming pools. and cooling towers as a chlorine stabilizer.
Paper & Pulp Industry
Amino sulfonic acid regulates degradation of pulp at the hydrochloride and chlorination stage due to temperature. It allows bleaching at lower pH and elevated temperature without any strength loss. It can be used as a bleaching aid to improve the whiteness and strength of the pulp. It also behaves as a Chloride stabilizer in the pulp & paper industry.
Dyes & Pigments Industry
Sulphamic acid removes extra nitrides that are useful in the diazotization reactions during pigments and dye stuff manufacturing. “Diazotization is the chemical process of converting a primary aromatic amine into diazonium salt of the amine”.
This acid also removes the existing nitrides in process water of emissions.
